I just finished it, using the tools learned in Pat Pattison’s Songwriting course to adjust the phrasing. I also finished all the tracking, playing all the parts, singing all the vocals as well as recording it here in my home studio. I hope you like it.

Song: She’s Easy (But Not In That Way)

If you enjoy the tune, I’d also like to make a plug (hope that’s OK) for you to VOTE for my song. It’s a contest sponsored by CBC here in Canada (although voting is not limited to geographic region). It’s the Searchlight 2014 Competition.

LOOK FOR THE VOTE FOR THIS ARTIST BUTTON DOWN THE PAGE TO THE RIGHT

You can vote ONCE PER DAY so, if you like the tune, I’d really be honoured if you’d vote for me (and often) and tell your friends. Also, lots of other artists in the contest, so here’s a chance to hear a lot of other artists material as well.

Thank you!
The Open Mics are on haitus; however, LOTS of gigs and performances tp tell you about …

Fri July 19: Weathered Kings is playing at The Drake in Mississauga starting at 9:30pm. I won’t be there (I’m heading up to Kincardine for a family wedding) — HOWEVER, WK alumni Howard Rabkin (bass) and Nick Robitaille (guitar) will be there along with Mike and our new drummer Kelly Micallef to rock the joint.

Sat July 20: Blackboard Blues Band makes it’s debut at the Amacon Rotary Ribfest in Mississauga (I’ll be back from Kincardine for this gig!). We close off the night from 9pm-11pm at the fantastic Celebration Square stage; but come early to enjoy all the festivities and the Rotaract Sing Fest that will precede our performance.

Thu July 25 – Sat July 27: Blackboard Blues Band returns to the 25th Beaches International Jazz Festival in front of the Firehall on Queen (just east of Woodbine) — 1904 Queen St. E. We play Thu-Sat from 7pm-11pm each evening. A number of my talented friends are also participating in this year’s Streetfest, so come on down and check out all the great music.

Sun July 28: Blackboard Blues Band is at it again, this time playing at the Richmond Hill Ribfest at Richmond Green Park, 1300 Elgin Mills Rd., E., in (where else?) Richmond Hill, Ontario. Our performance starts at 2pm.

Speaking of Blackboard Blues Band, we were on CTV Toronto news last week as part of the coverage of the 25th Beaches Jazz Festival. Check out this report by Andria Case.

I hope everyone is coping with the very hot weather and enjoying your summer.

It’s a New Year, so let’s start off a new Open Mic Night in the Mississauga/Brampton area !

Beginning Thursday January 10th: I will be hosting a Weekly Open Mic Night at The Crown and Lion, located at 7985 Financial Drive, Brampton, Ontario (905) 453-1000. The Crown and Lion is located one block east of Steeles and Mississauga Rd.

It is my goal to provide a fun and entertaining environment for aspiring (and established) artists to come out and showcase their talents. If you sing or play an instrument, this is the place to be. You’ll get a chance to perform, meet other artists and get noticed. Even if you don’t play or sing, come out to listen to some of the amazing talent here in Mississauga, Brampton and the surrounding area.

Open Mic Thursdays will run from 8pm to midnight each Thursday evening starting January 10th, 2013. To be fair to all the performers, slots will be 3 songs (or 15 minutes) and these slots will be allocated via a sign-up sheet. If time permits, you may be able to sign up for a second slot. I will start the evening off with a few songs, to get everyone “in the mood”, then the other artists will take to the stage.

PA system,an amplifier, a keyboard and a couple of microphones on stands will be provided, along with assorted percussion instruments (shakers, tambourine, etc.). Please bring your own instrument. This will be primarily an Open Mic Night (not an Open Jam), so please be prepared to accompany yourself or bring a friend to do so. That said, if the performer is cool with other people getting up to help them, that’s fine, too!

The Crown and Lion is a great place, the food & drink is very good and reasonably-priced and the staff are wonderful. I’m really looking forward to hosting these nights and making it “the place to be” on Thursday evenings. Tell your friends, bring them out and let’s have a great time!

If you have any questions regarding the Open Mic Night, please contact me at info@playD.ca.

A lot of great music was performed with Age of Reason, Blackboard Blues Band, Six String Mojo and Weathered Kings. As well, I met a lot of great musicians who have become friends and started performing at various Open Mic Nights in Mississauga and Toronto. I loved it so much, I started my own Open Mic Night on Wednesday evenings at The Drake & Firkin here in Mississauga. I also had the chance to record some talented artists here in my playD studio and help them realize some of their dreams.

Personally, this was the year I lost my father, a former business partner and friend and most recently, a theatre friend and former Rotarian I brought into my club, the Rotary Club of Mississauga-Meadowvale. I also became President of the club on July 1st. Our family also welcomed a new addition, a new puppy named Buddy.

I am guessing my year has been similar to each of yours — happy times punctuated by tragedy or loss and other, more joyful milestones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support this past year, whether it be coming out to see me perform, joining me onstage at the Open Mic Nights, or simply sending me a note of encouragement or congratulations — these small acts of kindness are VERY much appreciated and valued.

To all of you — Happy New Year and all the best in 2013.

I’ve had a wonderful time hosting the Open Mic Night each and every Wednesday at The Drake & Firkin in Mississauga.

Here is a link to a video which captures a performance by Luch, who came out first on Oct 31 and has been back each week since. VIDEO

I hope you’ll join us soon…

As usual, a number of very talented performers showed up and performed for an appreciative audience. Being Halloween, some of the performers and the staff at The Drake & Firkin (as well as myself) dressed up for the occasion.

Thanks to new friends, Luch and Ewan, for showcasing their talents, as well as our Open Mic Night regular, Marty. It was great to see Art again (this time performing with Clint) and, although he didn’t get up this time, thanks to Guitar World’s Jim Toris for attending and lending his support. A special thanks to my friend, Jackie Fox, who came dressed as Slash from Guns ‘n’ Roses (complete with Les Paul guitar) and let me perform “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door (GnR version)” and “Wheels (Foo Fighters)” with her onstage.

Beginning Wednesday September 19th: I will be hosting a Weekly Open Mic Night at The Drake n Firkin, located at 6982 Financial Drive, Mississauga, Ontario (905) 567-9173. I’ve been at a number of local Open Mic Nights around the area this summer and believe me, there is a LOT of talent out there. It is my goal to provide a fun and entertaining environment for aspiring (and established) artists to come out and showcase their talents. If you sing or play an instrument, this is the place to be. You’ll get a chance to perform, meet other artists and get noticed. Even if you don’t play or sing, come out to listen to some of the amazing talent here in Mississauga and the surrounding area.

With A Little Help From My Friends Wednesdays will run from 8pm to midnight each Wednesday starting Sept 19th.

The Drake n Firkin is a great venue (2nd home of The Weathered Kings), the food & drink is very good and reasonably-priced and the staff are amazing. I’m really looking forward to hosting these nights and making it “the place to be” on Wednesday nights. Tell your friends, bring them out and let’s have a great time!
